This lawless ruling

Fierce Planet Posted on April 8, 2023 by jnfrApril 8, 2023

As expected, Judge Kacsmaryk has ruled mifepristone illegal, ignoring every scrap of science and law to impose the will of the anti-abortion movement. At the same time, a judge in Washington state ruled that the FDA must keep mifepristone available, though this ruling was not for the entire U.S. (gift link). This conflict will no doubt be sent to the Supreme Court, and quickly. Pro-choice forces are moving consistently against Republicans as election defeats pile up. If the Supremes rule in such a way that abortion becomes unavailable across the states, pressure for change from women and progressives will only … Continue reading →

Jim Crow never actually died

Fierce Planet Posted on April 7, 2023 by jnfrApril 7, 2023

And we’re definitely seeing a resurgence in Tennessee where three state legislators joined in a protest against gun violence, and only the two young black men were stripped of their office. (gift link) Justin Jones (front) and Justin Peterson, currently not members of the Tennessee Legislature Tennessee vote marks latest GOP move to stifle dissent, experts say Tennessee Republicans’ dramatic expulsion of two Democrats who agitated for gun control in the state Capitol after a mass killing is the latest move by Republican state leaders around the country to stifle dissent and expand their power base, free speech experts say. One step down the road

Fierce Planet Posted on March 19, 2023 by jnfrMarch 19, 2023

…towards creating the theocratic country conservatives long for. (gift link, no paywall) Wyoming’s GOP governor signs law banning abortion pills Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) late Friday signed into law a ban on abortion pills, as the state adopted what appears to be the nation’s first such state law. The new law says that it will be “unlawful to prescribe, dispense, distribute, sell or use any drug for the purpose of procuring or performing an abortion.” The law includes penalties of up to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $9,000. But it exempts people who take abortion … Continue reading →

The next threat to abortion rights

Fierce Planet Posted on February 8, 2023 by jnfrFebruary 11, 2023

I’ve pulled together many more articles on the fight over abortion rights as it continues here in the States. Some are quite positive from a pro-choice point of view, as states set themselves up to be abortion sanctuaries. Some showcase the continuing efforts to further force all states to comply with the forced-birth agenda of anti-choice activists. As I have pointed out before, anti-choice activists continue to look for ways to restrict access to abortion pills in particular, since most abortions these days are medication abortions. Since the postal service is federal, there is no easy way to keep pills … Continue reading →

Republicans have a new tax plan

Fierce Planet Posted on January 26, 2023 by jnfrJanuary 29, 2023

Let PoliticsGirl tell you about how their plan will make rich oligarchs much richer, while keeping the rest of us poorer and more stressed. This is the best breakdown of the new 30% tax Republicans are trying to add to every single thing you purchase pic.twitter.com/VM3XeRdcCF — MeidasTouch (@MeidasTouch) January 26, 2023

Republicans are a mess

Fierce Planet Posted on January 4, 2023 by jnfrJanuary 4, 2023

But Democrats are doing just fine. Earlier I mentioned that House Democrats had completed a shift of leadership for their caucus, with Hakeem Jeffries becoming caucus Leader. He was easily voted in by his caucus, and in fact won more votes in the Speaker’s race than poor, miserable Kevin McCarthy, though like McCarthy, Jeffries has no obvious path to taking over as Speaker. I said this version of Congress was going to be a mess, but I have to say the mess is already more spectacular than I ever imagined, and the whole thing completely belongs to the Republicans. Overall, … Continue reading →

Two podcasts ~ Choose a side

Fierce Planet Posted on December 12, 2022 by jnfrDecember 12, 2022

This weekend I caught up with a couple of podcasts, and I’d like to highlight a few things. First is a segment on Pod Save America. I’ve set this up so it goes directly to an interview with Strict Scrutiny‘s Kate Shaw, a lawyer talking here about the Supreme Court hearing Moore v. Harper last week. (Strict Scrutiny itself is another excellent podcast, if you’re looking for some top-notch legal minds discussing the issues of the day.) This case presents the “Independent State Legislature Theory”, which you will no doubt hear about a lot in the near future. It is … Continue reading →

Where we stand

Fierce Planet Posted on November 10, 2022 by jnfrNovember 10, 2022

I still feel good about the election this week, though the Congressional side of things will remain unsettled for a while longer. But democracy has survived to fight another day, and that matters a lot. Women in particular turned out in defense of abortion rights and every state that had a vote on the issue upheld the right to choose. There is also a strong likelihood that Democrats will continue to hold the Senate, and there was no red wave in the House or anywhere else. The Secretary of State positions have been kept out of the hands of the … Continue reading →

A red mirage

Fierce Planet Posted on November 8, 2022 by jnfrNovember 8, 2022

This illusion is deliberately formed when mail-in and early votes are held back to be counted after votes placed on election day. Since mail-in votes tend to be heavily Democratic, in practice this looks as if Republicans are winning early in the evening, then slowly Democratic votes are counted into the majority. Then Republicans claim that the later count was fraudulent, even though the mail-in votes are as valid as any. Expect to see a lot of this tonight and tomorrow, alongside other efforts to claim fraud where there is none. Will the GQP prime their base for action by … Continue reading →
