For now, staying safe and sane in this neo-facist environment. Autocracy: Rules for Survival … Trump is anything but a regular politician and this has been anything but a regular election. Trump will be only the fourth candidate in history and the second in more than a century to win the presidency after losing the popular vote. He is also probably the first candidate in history to win the presidency despite having been shown repeatedly by the national media to be a chronic liar, sexual predator, serial tax-avoider, and race-baiter who has attracted the likes of the Ku Klux Klan. … Continue reading →

Equality Day

Fierce Planet Posted on August 26, 2013 by jnfrAugust 26, 2013

On August 26, 1920, women were at last granted the right to vote. Today is Women’s Equality Day. The picture below is from 1918. In a time when voting rights are under constant attack, I hope we show the same courage as those who fought for our rights so many years ago. Irin Carmon at MSNBC’s site has an interesting round-up from those days, predicting the evils that would befall if women were allowed to vote.

If you only had $4.33 a day for food…

Fierce Planet Posted on September 29, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 29, 2010

What would you eat? What would you do without? And how would you feel if that extravagant sum was suddenly decreased to only $3.75? That’s the amount food stamp recipients will receive if Congress lowers food stamp benefits. In order to boost state Medicaid and education funds Congress has proposed to cut $26 billion from food stamp programs, sort of taking from the poor and working class in order to help the poor and working class. It’s a very odd decision, to say the least. The New York Coalition Against Hunger has a post that illustrates how much food you … Continue reading →

More on income inequality

Fierce Planet Posted on September 15, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 28, 2010

Annie Lowrey at the Washington Independent points us to a report on income inequality from the Senate’s Joint Economic Committee. She highlights several graphs and conclusions that show the remarkable way that the wealthy have become even more so over the past decade, while middle class and working incomes have stagnated or declined. The charts are interesting in part because they break out income and tax rates according to the various modern-day Presidential administrations. Here is one example: Even under Clinton you can see that the wealthy increased their share of total income. And in fact, Lowrey notes that according … Continue reading →
