This was predicted, and here it is…

Fierce Planet Posted on December 28, 2022 by jnfrDecember 28, 2022

You might recall that I posted earlier about my certainty conservatives would begin to target people who provide or use medications for early-stage abortions: Medication abortion – will we lose that too? I was concerned as well that they might start to push against even informational pages like the one I keep on this site. Unfortunately, it looks like I was right, starting of course in the states where abortion has been banned. (gift link, no paywall for a while) Conservatives complain abortion bans not enforced, want jail time for pill ‘trafficking’ Six months after their Supreme Court victory, conservatives … Continue reading →

Where we stand

Fierce Planet Posted on November 10, 2022 by jnfrNovember 10, 2022

I still feel good about the election this week, though the Congressional side of things will remain unsettled for a while longer. But democracy has survived to fight another day, and that matters a lot. Women in particular turned out in defense of abortion rights and every state that had a vote on the issue upheld the right to choose. There is also a strong likelihood that Democrats will continue to hold the Senate, and there was no red wave in the House or anywhere else. The Secretary of State positions have been kept out of the hands of the … Continue reading →

This was obviously going to happen…

Abortion bans stop women from getting essential, life-saving healthcare. State abortion bans are preventing cancer patients from getting chemotherapy Affidavits in Ohio show people had to leave the state for abortions before they could get cancer treatment. It’s an issue across the country. …In at least two cases, cancer patients have been blocked from receiving treatment until their pregnancies were terminated — and getting an abortion required them to leave the state. The cases underscore how abortion bans — even those with exceptions to save the life of the pregnant person — have upended patients’ lives and limited doctors’ abilities … Continue reading →

Good news from Michigan

Fierce Planet Posted on September 8, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 8, 2022

In an earlier post I pointed out that Michigan’s state legislature had intervened against the will of the electorate and refused to allow abortion rights to be enshrined in the state. Today the Lege was overruled by the state Supreme Court and the measure will be on the ballot after all. BREAKING: Michigan Supreme Court in a 5-2 decision ordered the Reproductive Freedom For All measure placed on the ballot after the Board of State Canvassers deadlocked. This measure will enshrine abortion rights into the state’s Constitution (irrevocable by SCOTUS OR Congress). — Andrew Wortman 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸 (@AmoneyResists) September 8, 2022 … Continue reading →

Fired up

Fierce Planet Posted on September 5, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 5, 2022

This matches what I see/feel around the mid-terms this year (gift link, will get you through the paywall for a while). Women Are So Fired Up to Vote, I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It …once the actual Dobbs decision came down, everything changed. For many Americans, confronting the loss of abortion rights was different from anticipating it. In my 28 years analyzing elections, I’ve never seen anything like what’s happened in the past two months in American politics: Women are registering to vote in numbers I’ve never witnessed. I’ve run out of superlatives to describe how different this moment is, … Continue reading →
