This lawless ruling

Fierce Planet Posted on April 8, 2023 by jnfrApril 8, 2023

As expected, Judge Kacsmaryk has ruled mifepristone illegal, ignoring every scrap of science and law to impose the will of the anti-abortion movement. At the same time, a judge in Washington state ruled that the FDA must keep mifepristone available, though this ruling was not for the entire U.S. (gift link). This conflict will no doubt be sent to the Supreme Court, and quickly. Pro-choice forces are moving consistently against Republicans as election defeats pile up. If the Supremes rule in such a way that abortion becomes unavailable across the states, pressure for change from women and progressives will only … Continue reading →

Shatner touches the sky

Fierce Planet Posted on April 2, 2023 by jnfrApril 2, 2023

And it changes his perspective on Earth. In a new documentary on his life, he recalls how he felt when he first returned from a short trip into outer space. William Shatner gets existential prior to the premiere of his documentary, You Can Call Me Bill …Shatner’s been a little more existential since his trip up into outer space on one of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin expeditions. It’s spurred him to get more involved in environmental activism as he thinks about humanity in a greater sense. “When I came out of the space ship I was crying, just sobbing, and … Continue reading →

Biden’s BFD

Fierce Planet Posted on March 11, 2021 by jnfrMarch 11, 2021

Hat tip to Balloon Juice commenters for the title. Eric Levitz at New York Magazine seems to like that title too. He lays out details of what’s in the bill. Biden’s COVID-Relief Bill Is a Big F**king Deal • The average household in the bottom quintile of America’s economic ladder will see its annual income rise by more than 20 percent. • A family of four with one working parent and one unemployed one will have $12,460 more in government benefits to help them make ends meet. • The poorest single mothers in America will receive at least $3,000 more … Continue reading →

For me, 50 weeks today

Fierce Planet Posted on March 2, 2021 by jnfrMarch 11, 2021

That’s how long our house has kept itself in quarantine so far. And today I got my first shot of the Moderna vaccine here in Colorado. Mr. J isn’t eligible yet, so we’ll keep ourselves in quarantine until we both have as full immunity as we can get. Guess who else got her shot today? Dolly Parton. Dolly gets a dose of her own medicine. @VUMChealth pic.twitter.com/38kJrDzLqC — Dolly Parton (@DollyParton) March 2, 2021 She is such a lovely person and I can’t thank her enough for helping to fund the vaccine I received today. Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine…

Rovers on Mars

Fierce Planet Posted on July 29, 2020 by jnfrJuly 29, 2020

Tomorrow NASA will launch a new Rover to Mars, at 7 a.m. Eastern time. This one is named Perseverance, and it’s much like Curiosity, although it does have its own drone to fly around. The launch will stream live, if you’re up that early. I’m gonna try to be. I love the Rovers. I actually joined Twitter so that I could follow Spirit and Opportunity back in the day. And to remind you of the wonders of Mars, here’s a high-def video of all the things we’ve seen through the Rovers on our neighboring planet.
