Never forget, and don’t let the Repulicans gaslight you about the truth of what happened.   The New York Times put together a visual timeline of the assault. You’ll have to click through to see it on YouTube. Day of Rage: How Trump Supporters Took the U.S. Capitol

Respect the Daily Kos Guild, engage with the union

Fierce Planet Posted on January 23, 2023 by jnfrJanuary 26, 2023

Friends and kindred spirits wandering by this site probably have heard of DailyKos, the ur-parent blog of the US progressive sphere. Just last year, DKos (as the place is often known) celebrated the site’s 20th anniversary. Personally, I’ve been a member there for 18 of those years. I’m not entirely sure who makes up “Daily Kos Management” (DKM) these days, but a number of the workers at the site are represented by the Daily Kos Guild (DKG), a Pacific Media Workers Guild member and certified as the bargaining unit of represented staff. DKM recently announced layoffs that would affect more … Continue reading →

State of the World 2023

Fierce Planet Posted on January 6, 2023 by jnfrJanuary 6, 2023

Happening now at The Well: a topic where Jon Lebkowsky, Bruce Sterling, and a very smart cast of dozens consider the state of the world as the new year dawns. So far it’s been a wide-ranging, global discussion about crypto, AI, climate change, health and COVID, and more. The entire topic is world-readable, though non-members can’t post directly but rather need to send questions or comments by email to the hosts. (Most of the Well is only open to members.) This is the 22nd iteration of this discussion, and earlier versions can also be found among the topics in the … Continue reading →

What have we done with the Internet?

Fierce Planet Posted on December 21, 2022 by jnfrJanuary 22, 2023

What it is, is up to us. — Howard Rheingold, author of The Virtual Community I think of myself as an OG Internet inhabitant, because I was one of the early commercial consumers who arrived online after NSFNet began to release control of the network to corporate actors. For me, that began in 1993. I had been hanging around bulletin board systems (BBSs) for a year or two, after peace activists I worked with started to use computers for communication and organizing. I ended up on a system I’d heard of some years before, The Well, created in 1985 and … Continue reading →

Hobipalooza — Checking in with ARMY

Fierce Planet Posted on July 27, 2022 by jnfrJuly 27, 2022

Continuing thoughts on the complexities of ARMY, only peripherally about j-hope.💜 Quite long. I have looked again and again at the My White House Day With Army post. I don’t write romantic. I really never write romantic. And yet this is the most romantic thing I can imagine writing in my entire life. I’ve thought a dozen times that I should delete it, but I can’t. All I see is an honest account of exactly how I felt that day. It was a peak day in my life, and though I’m embarrassed, I can’t be sorry for it. We’re all … Continue reading →

A question for the NYT to ponder

Fierce Planet Posted on June 3, 2022 by jnfrJune 3, 2022

What makes this a “mock” gallows, exactly? Hastily constructed? Sure. “Mock?” Anyone think it couldn’t have worked? pic.twitter.com/YQg7Nr2kVF — David Waldman-1, of Yorktown LLC™ (@KagroX) June 3, 2022 Really looking forward to the public hearings next week.

The important point

Fierce Planet Posted on October 16, 2021 by jnfrOctober 16, 2021

This should be the main headline on every news site, from now until the planet burns. But it’s not of course, and that’s a shame. At least we have Sludge to point out the truth for us.
