To the ones who keep the passion, respect…

Fierce Planet Posted on December 4, 2022 by jnfrDecember 4, 2022

I’m writing a very personal post, which as usual means I’m half-blocked and writing very slowly. Can’t be helped, this is my only process. So while that goes on, let’s celebrate Jane Fonda, who at the age of 84, after five arrests and recent treatment for cancer, once again leads the Fire Drill protests that began years ago, before Covid. (gift link should get you past the firewall). Their goal is to increase awareness of the continual dangers of climate change, and to pressure Congress to take action now. Fonda retakes the Hill: ‘Cancer is scary, but the climate crisis … Continue reading →

Climate heroes

Including Rosemary Mosco herself. A lot of online climate change talk focuses on villains, and it can be so isolating. But there are many, many amazing people who are taking action. Here are 16 of them. pic.twitter.com/vEivvja20M — Rosemary Mosco (Bird And Moon Comics) (@RosemaryMosco) August 16, 2022

The Manchin Act

Fierce Planet Posted on August 1, 2022 by jnfrAugust 1, 2022

The deeply imperfect “Inflation Reduction Act” is so important to pass. I won’t truly believe in the passage until I see it, of course, because our dysfunctional Congress does tend to kill every potential step forward. But this bill contains many policies that can help us make real progress against the most important emergency we face: climate change and the resulting disruption to current ecological systems on earth, systems that humans and other living things rely on for survival. From Rebecca Solnit and Terry Tempest Williams: Humanity can’t equivocate any longer. This is a climate emergency …The climate emergency has … Continue reading →

Fierce Planet Posted on January 10, 2020 by jnfrJanuary 10, 2020

And even those who survive may have no habitat to return to. From the Washington Post: A billion animals have been caught in Australia’s fires. Some may go extinct. Some of the rarest species on Earth are threatened by fires scorching their habitats, scientists warn. …More than 1 billion mammals, birds and reptiles nationwide — some of them found nowhere else on Earth — may have been affected or killed by the fires sweeping across Australia, according to a University of Sydney estimate. The potential toll is far greater when other types of animals are included. “We’re not just talking … Continue reading →

Our most pressing issue

Fierce Planet Posted on January 26, 2019 by jnfrJanuary 26, 2019

My teenage daughter has made a short video trying to explain to other young people––& to herself––why biodiversity loss, extinction & vanishing species really, really matter. It’s spoken from the heart. It’s about one of the vital issues of our times. Please share, show, discuss! pic.twitter.com/8T2oStvOgr — Robert Macfarlane (@RobGMacfarlane) January 26, 2019
