This energy is what we need…

Fierce Planet Posted on August 6, 2022 by jnfrAugust 6, 2022

…to win in the mid-terms. These organizers in Kansas walked door-to-door, day after day, getting out the vote to defeat Kansas’s abominable abortion law. They raised tons of money to support the effort. They coordinated with Indivisible and never gave up. Every one of us has to match their heart and their efforts to win this fall. This is an interview with community organizer Yazmin Bruno-Valdez, and with Olivia Julianna of Gen-Z for Change. You may have heard of Olivia. She was attacked by Matt Gaetz, body-shamed publicly, and she used that attention to raise more than two million dollars … Continue reading →

Victor Orban, Leader of CPAC

Fierce Planet Posted on August 5, 2022 by jnfrAugust 5, 2022

An authoritarian white nationalist, just the sort of politician Republicans love. Listen to his words below, and hear the cheers. Orban’s type of patriarchal government—anti-gay, anti-feminist, anti-multiculturalism—is the government they wish to impose on the rest of us. Don’t look away.   Viktor Orban is an authoritarian who trafficks in antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories, embraces antisemitic imagery, and engages in racist rhetoric. Republicans welcoming him with a standing ovation at #CPAC is all you need to know about the danger of today's @GOP. https://t.co/kvtoTOBXOo — Jewish Dems (@USJewishDems) August 5, 2022 ETA: Laura Jedeed has more.

Kansas!

Fierce Planet Posted on August 3, 2022 by jnfrAugust 3, 2022

The first vote in the post-Dobbs era has ended, and Kansas, considered a very red state these days, has voted to keep abortion legal in the state. (gift link, no paywall) This is an enormous victory for women, and for freedom everywhere. That the vote was not even close should be somewhat reassuring, but there is still a very long road ahead to the mid-terms. Let’s not get complacent. Remember: The people who will put themselves in charge of our bodies to demand our reproductive labor, will put themselves in charge of our bodies to demand every other kind of … Continue reading →

High engagement

Fierce Planet Posted on July 26, 2022 by jnfrJuly 26, 2022

We have to start planning for the 2022 midterm elections. So far, it seems Democratic engagement with the election is running high. How that will translate into voting turnout is hard to say, but let’s keep this sort of pressure on. WinRed, of course, was created specifically as a counter to ActBlue, which has been so successful in raising small dollar donations for Democratic candidates. WinRed works for them, but has never been quite as successful as ActBlue has been. GOP small-dollar donations via WinRed are flat this year, while Democrats' have increased substantially the last 2 months on ActBluehttps://t.co/LdteF1mLxZ … Continue reading →

Beyond the Scenes ~ The Daily Show ~ July 12, 2022

Fierce Planet Posted on July 13, 2022 by jnfrAugust 1, 2022

The whole episode is worth a listen, starting off with Roy Woods, Jr. interviewing Jordan Klepper and his field producer about their Daily Show segments with MAGA types on Jan. 6, and other strange people at other rallies. I’ve set this up to start at a later segment (at 38:42), where Chris Hayes talks about the events of January 6th, and what they might mean for our future elections. Below the video I’ve included a transcript of a portion of this discussion that seems especially pertinent to those future elections. As always, any transcription errors are my own. Transcript from … Continue reading →

No one should have to endure this

Fierce Planet Posted on June 22, 2022 by jnfrJune 22, 2022

And it is fully on Trump and the Republican Party who treat ordinary citizens this way, people who are working to make our elections happen, and who have done absolutely nothing to bring this on themselves. "There is nowhere I feel safe. Nowhere. Do you know how it feels to have the president of the US target you? … He targeted me, Lady Ruby, a small business owner, a mother, a proud American citizen, who stood up to help Fulton County run an election in the middle of a pandemic" pic.twitter.com/PeJcdw3J59 — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 21, 2022

One more reason the mid-terms are essential

Fierce Planet Posted on June 12, 2022 by jnfrJune 12, 2022

Because Russia thinks Republicans will win. This compilation of clips explains why the Russians think they're winning and don't need to negotiate. Spoiler: they're waiting for the GOP to prevail in midterms and abandon Ukraine. They're also encouraged by our media coverage—especially Tucker Carlson.https://t.co/h05qK1g2fs pic.twitter.com/XBw1G3VTHY — Julia Davis (@JuliaDavisNews) June 9, 2022

A question for the NYT to ponder

Fierce Planet Posted on June 3, 2022 by jnfrJune 3, 2022

What makes this a “mock” gallows, exactly? Hastily constructed? Sure. “Mock?” Anyone think it couldn’t have worked? pic.twitter.com/YQg7Nr2kVF — David Waldman-1, of Yorktown LLC™ (@KagroX) June 3, 2022 Really looking forward to the public hearings next week.
