Two podcasts ~ Choose a side

Fierce Planet Posted on December 12, 2022 by jnfrDecember 12, 2022

This weekend I caught up with a couple of podcasts, and I’d like to highlight a few things. First is a segment on Pod Save America. I’ve set this up so it goes directly to an interview with Strict Scrutiny‘s Kate Shaw, a lawyer talking here about the Supreme Court hearing Moore v. Harper last week. (Strict Scrutiny itself is another excellent podcast, if you’re looking for some top-notch legal minds discussing the issues of the day.) This case presents the “Independent State Legislature Theory”, which you will no doubt hear about a lot in the near future. It is … Continue reading →

Fierce Planet Posted on November 4, 2022 by jnfrNovember 5, 2022

I’m not sure we know. Don’t let anyone tell you young people don’t show up to vote. We are — and we will continue to show up these last five days until Election Day, including on campus at UT Austin! pic.twitter.com/h2AW1JDIRb — NextGen America (@NextGenAmerica) November 3, 2022 ETA: This report: Women under 25 could be the MVPs of the midterms Why more young women are registered to vote in the midterms — and why polling is ignoring them.

Saying it right out loud

Fierce Planet Posted on November 3, 2022 by jnfrNovember 3, 2022

WOW. The GOP nominee for governor of Wisconsin makes it 100% clear: “Republicans will never lose another election in Wisconsin after I’m elected governor."https://t.co/5PZn6iMRQx Told you. *This* is what many of these GOP candidates are *actually* running on: https://t.co/L5wmG6yJOx — Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) November 1, 2022

We hear you. We see you.

Fierce Planet Posted on October 19, 2022 by jnfrOctober 19, 2022

To the women of Iran, always. One of the best commentaries about what “Zan, Zendegi, Azadi,” [Woman, Life, Liberty] mean, by @AliVelshi. He ends the segment with this message to the Iranian women: “You are not voiceless; we hear you, we see you.” A must watch!#MahsaAmini #مهسا_امینی #IranProtests pic.twitter.com/gnDyNAUjfV — Omid Memarian (@Omid_M) October 18, 2022

A crucial economic sector for Iran. Oil workers in Iran went on strike in support of protests against the regime. Oil is a critical sector for Iran. This is a big deal. pic.twitter.com/8IJUM1paNK — Fifty Shades of Whey (@davenewworld_2) October 11, 2022   And the women’s protests have spread among schoolgirls as well. The courage this takes can not be overstated. The girls took over their school and are chanting "death to the dictator"❤️ #Iran pic.twitter.com/s9MX8Dbsll — Sofia Ukraini (@SlavaUk30722777) October 4, 2022 This report from The New Yorker is a good read. Repression in Iran

Fierce Planet Posted on October 6, 2022 by jnfrOctober 6, 2022

Authorities in Iran continue to crack down on the widespread protests that arose in the wake of Mahsa Amini’s death while she was in the custody of the morals police. We finally have an in-depth review of how the government has reacted to the protests, in the form of a well researched article on the evidence that the government’s response has been harsh and terrible. (WashPost gift link should get you past the paywall for a while). Tactics of repression: How Iran is trying to stop Mahsa Amini protests A visual forensics analysis shows authorities using indiscriminate force, making violent … Continue reading →

Abortion rights matter in this election

Fierce Planet Posted on October 5, 2022 by jnfrOctober 5, 2022

The big wave of voter registration we’ve seen from women since the Dobbs decision continues. Tom Bonier talks about it with Teen Vogue. Women Are Registering to Vote in Huge Numbers in Response to the Roe Decision In battleground states like Georgia, Wisconsin, and Arizona, there’s been a surge of women registering to vote. …Tom Bonier, the CEO of TargetSmart, says he was surprised by the data. “You tend not to see significant movement in voter registration,” Bonier tells Teen Vogue. …what he found was like nothing he’s ever seen in his 28 years of analyzing elections. “Women are registering … Continue reading →

Women of Iran ~ Dancing for freedom

Fierce Planet Posted on September 26, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 29, 2022

Reports (from MSNBC, no link) are that somewhere between 40 and 50 people have been killed in and around the Iranian protests. The protests are not disappearing, though, if anything they continue to spread. Internet outages continue, so information still comes slowly. The women have been forbidden to dance, but they dance anyway. I love these clips so much. This is what civil disobedience looks like in an Islamic Republic. #IranProtests #IranRevolution For 43 years women in #Iran have been forbidden to dance & sing in public or show their hair & they are saying enough. It’s really that simple. … Continue reading →

Update on Iranian protests

Fierce Planet Posted on September 23, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 23, 2022

From Sept. 20, this is the first video I saw from the protests in Iran. Unprecedented scenes in Iran: woman sits on top of utility box and cuts her hair in main square in Kerman to protest death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the morality police. People clap their hands and chant “Death to the dictator.” #مهسا_امینی pic.twitter.com/2oyuKV80Ac — Golnaz Esfandiari (@GEsfandiari) September 20, 2022 A report from Arash Azizi at Newsweek: Iran’s Regime May Have Just Sparked a Revolution On Sept. 17, Mahsa’s funeral in her native Kurdistan province was accompanied by massive protests which soon spread … Continue reading →
