Sore winners

Fierce Planet Posted on October 28, 2010 by jnfrOctober 28, 2010

Tom Junod at Esquire has an important take on the nature of the Tea Party and the oddity of how these folks, who are generally among the winners of our society, feel as if they are put upon minorities and losers. Junod calls them the “Sore Winners” and uses the example of a friend of his. This friend has a good life, he is well-off and he and his family have everything they need and many luxuries. Rather than feeling blessed, they feel somehow persecuted by those they consider “less deserving” than themselves. Indeed, he wasn’t as happy for himself … Continue reading →

The Republican Party’s governing philosophy

Fierce Planet Posted on October 26, 2010 by jnfrOctober 26, 2010

Seriously, the Republicans in Congress don’t have one. What drives them is a pure lust for power, and money for their corporate backers. They have no actual ideas about how to grow the economy, how to raise wages, how to improve education, or about what to do for any other problem facing the country. They’ve got nothing. “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” — Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Watch them burn

Fierce Planet Posted on October 4, 2010 by jnfrOctober 4, 2010

The most shocking story of the day is up at Think Progress: Tennessee County’s Subscription-Based Firefighters Watch As Family Home Burns Down . Seriously, Obion County has a subscription-based fire department that only covers those who subscribe, rather than the normal sort that is paid out of taxes and covers everyone. So firefighters came to the fire and watched as that family’s home burned to the ground. They hadn’t been paid, so they refused to help. It’s the perfect example of life under a libertarian, big business conservative vision of life, where we have no mutual responsibilities to our community … Continue reading →

Republicans never change

Fierce Planet Posted on September 27, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 27, 2010

I know this won’t come as a surprise to anyone reading this blog, but the Republicans are up to their same old tricks. They say they’re concerned for “small business” but in fact they are only interested in enriching the wealthy. Democratic Rapid Response calls them out on their “Pledge to America” in this short video.

Disappointment in the Senate, again

Fierce Planet Posted on September 22, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 22, 2010

By now you’ve heard that the Senate refused to allow debate on the Defense Appropriation Bill in order to scuttle the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. Once again Republicans, aided by a couple of ConservaDems, refused to even discuss a bill in the Senate. This has been their consistent pattern since the Democrats took control. Lawrence O’Donnell and Rachel Maddow had an excellent discussion of this dynamic in this segment from the Rachel Maddow show last night. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy Keep in mind that a majority of the American public … Continue reading →

How bad will it be come November?

Fierce Planet Posted on August 31, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 2, 2010

The question of the day seems to be how to interpret recent generic polling that shows the Dems still trailing in general terms, either by a little or by a lot. No one doubts that if the Republicans actually take control of either house of Congress, they will again lead off with spurious investigations and other kinds of disruptions meant to solidify their political good fortune. The fact that their actions hurt the country doesn’t seem to matter to them at all. I know for myself I am not as energized as I was in 2008, though I will vote … Continue reading →
