About that $100 Billion…

Fierce Planet Posted on January 5, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 5, 2011

In the Republicans’ proposed “Pledge to America” which they published during the election, the GOP promised to shave a full $100 billion off of government spending the first year they were in charge of the budget. Apparently they over-promised, as the New York Times is now reporting that the actual number may be only half that size. From the GOP’s Pledge to America: “We will roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels, saving us at least $100 billion in the first year alone.” Another broken promise by the House Republicans, and it’s only their first day on the job!

Hypocrisy from the GetGo

Fierce Planet Posted on January 4, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 4, 2011

So, the House is going to start out with a vote to repeal the affordable care act on Jan. 12. You can see the two-page bill here (.PDF file). It’s pretty amusing that in two pages of large double-spaced type, they manage to write “Job-Killing Health Care Bill” at least five times. Also too: they have exempted themselves from their own CutGo promise and won’t account for the added $1 trillion the repeal would add to the deficit (according to CBO estimates). And while they complained mightily when Dems didn’t allow them amendments on bills brought to the floor, they … Continue reading →

Get ready

Fierce Planet Posted on January 3, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 3, 2011

The 112th Congressional session starts this week, and it looks like it will be a doozy. Already Darrell Issa, who will have subpoena power on the oversight committee, has called this Administration “one of the most corrupt ever”, though he can’t point to anything concretely corrupt that Obama and his staff have done. And even though 61% of Americans want the deficit addressed by raising taxes on the rich, Republicans have taken tax hikes off the table entirely, and are preparing to increase the deficit by refusing to pay for any tax cuts they might make. In that poll, only … Continue reading →

Do you remember?

Fierce Planet Posted on November 1, 2010 by jnfrNovember 1, 2010

I do. And so do all the people in this video. And if you remember just how bad things were during the Bush Administration, you’ll know why you can’t vote Republican in this election. Don’t forget to vote tomorrow! And don’t forgot how we got into the mess we are in.

Sore winners

Fierce Planet Posted on October 28, 2010 by jnfrOctober 28, 2010

Tom Junod at Esquire has an important take on the nature of the Tea Party and the oddity of how these folks, who are generally among the winners of our society, feel as if they are put upon minorities and losers. Junod calls them the “Sore Winners” and uses the example of a friend of his. This friend has a good life, he is well-off and he and his family have everything they need and many luxuries. Rather than feeling blessed, they feel somehow persecuted by those they consider “less deserving” than themselves. Indeed, he wasn’t as happy for himself … Continue reading →

The Republican Party’s governing philosophy

Fierce Planet Posted on October 26, 2010 by jnfrOctober 26, 2010

Seriously, the Republicans in Congress don’t have one. What drives them is a pure lust for power, and money for their corporate backers. They have no actual ideas about how to grow the economy, how to raise wages, how to improve education, or about what to do for any other problem facing the country. They’ve got nothing. “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” — Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Republicans never change

Fierce Planet Posted on September 27, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 27, 2010

I know this won’t come as a surprise to anyone reading this blog, but the Republicans are up to their same old tricks. They say they’re concerned for “small business” but in fact they are only interested in enriching the wealthy. Democratic Rapid Response calls them out on their “Pledge to America” in this short video.

Disappointment in the Senate, again

Fierce Planet Posted on September 22, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 22, 2010

By now you’ve heard that the Senate refused to allow debate on the Defense Appropriation Bill in order to scuttle the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. Once again Republicans, aided by a couple of ConservaDems, refused to even discuss a bill in the Senate. This has been their consistent pattern since the Democrats took control. Lawrence O’Donnell and Rachel Maddow had an excellent discussion of this dynamic in this segment from the Rachel Maddow show last night. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy Keep in mind that a majority of the American public … Continue reading →

Eugene Robinson on Barbour’s history errors

Fierce Planet Posted on September 3, 2010 by jnfrSeptember 15, 2010

Recently Haley Barbour attempted to claim that he had attended integrated schools and had grown up in a Republican party where there really was no racial divide. This is pretty clearly an attempt to erase the real history of Republicans in the South, in preparation for Barbour’s own run for President in later years. Last night, Rachel Maddow did a thorough fact-check on Barbour’s twisted version of history. Then she turned to Eugene Robinson, who was not at all happy with the attempt to lie about what happened between blacks and whites in the South, and with the Republican Party’s … Continue reading →
