About that $100 Billion…

Fierce Planet Posted on January 5, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 5, 2011

In the Republicans’ proposed “Pledge to America” which they published during the election, the GOP promised to shave a full $100 billion off of government spending the first year they were in charge of the budget. Apparently they over-promised, as the New York Times is now reporting that the actual number may be only half that size.

From the GOP’s Pledge to America:

“We will roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels, saving us at least $100 billion in the first year alone.”

Another broken promise by the House Republicans, and it’s only their first day on the job!

Hypocrisy from the GetGo

Fierce Planet Posted on January 4, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 4, 2011

So, the House is going to start out with a vote to repeal the affordable care act on Jan. 12. You can see the two-page bill here (.PDF file). It’s pretty amusing that in two pages of large double-spaced type, they manage to write “Job-Killing Health Care Bill” at least five times.

Also too: they have exempted themselves from their own CutGo promise and won’t account for the added $1 trillion the repeal would add to the deficit (according to CBO estimates). And while they complained mightily when Dems didn’t allow them amendments on bills brought to the floor, they don’t intend to allow any amendments (because the Dems want to embarrass them by making them vote to repeal specific, very popular aspects of ACA).

So, the Republican House majority is off to a smashing start, with hypocrisy and posturing all the way!

Get ready

Fierce Planet Posted on January 3, 2011 by jnfrJanuary 3, 2011

The 112th Congressional session starts this week, and it looks like it will be a doozy. Already Darrell Issa, who will have subpoena power on the oversight committee, has called this Administration “one of the most corrupt ever”, though he can’t point to anything concretely corrupt that Obama and his staff have done. And even though 61% of Americans want the deficit addressed by raising taxes on the rich, Republicans have taken tax hikes off the table entirely, and are preparing to increase the deficit by refusing to pay for any tax cuts they might make. In that poll, only 3% of Americans want cuts to Social Security, so of course that is the first thing Lindsey Graham wants to do. So much for the will of the American people!

All of us who remember the bullshit that got slung around during the Clinton Administration know exactly where this is going, and it won’t be pretty. But if we have to endure it, at least we can keep track of it all and call out the excesses in our writing.

NaNoWriMo ~ not final!

Fierce Planet Posted on December 14, 2010 by jnfrDecember 14, 2010

NaNo is over, and I didn’t win, but I’m still writing. NaNoWriMo was a huge help to me, a big push towards getting back to writing regularly. I especially enjoyed my friends on the Well who also took part, and the fun we had talking about our writing and encouraging each other.

But I am a slow, slow writer, and not good at the sprinting style NaNo requires. So I’ll keep whacking away slowly at my novel through the next year, which is what it will take to finish, I think. But I am happy that NaNo gave me at least a little kick in the pants. Writing fiction is hard work for me, but very satisfying. I’ve been away from it for years, and I’m happy to be back.

NaNoWriMo

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2010 by jnfrNovember 9, 2010

I’m loving it, but it’s kicking my butt. I’ve never been a fast writer, and even pushing myself hard I’m not keeping up. But I love the book I’m writing on, and I do have forward motion. And that’s what counts most, right? Right?

You are not the American people

Fierce Planet Posted on November 4, 2010 by jnfrNovember 4, 2010

I’m already tired of hearing that “the American people spoke”. Some of them did, sure, the ones who turned out for this election. Last election a very different set of people spoke. Both sets are real, both sets count, and one doesn’t trump the other. There is no reason for Democrats to throw aside all of their own ideas about how to govern just because they lost the House in one election. We still have the Senate and the Presidency and there’s another election in two years. While I sincerely hope the Republicans are finally ready to come to the table and compromise, I don’t honestly believe they will, not for a second.

I guess we’ll see. But there’s no reason to roll over. The American people contain multitudes, and only some of them are conservative.

Oh, and Speaker-Elect Boehner, where are the jobs?

I am not despondent

Fierce Planet Posted on November 3, 2010 by jnfrNovember 3, 2010

In fact, I’m not particularly worried by this election. I am sorry to lose Betsy Markey. I am happy we’re keeping Michael Bennet. Some other good things happened in Colorado as well: all three tax-busting amendments were defeated, and the profoundly misguided “fetus personhood” amendment was defeated.

Still, even here conservatives made a lot of gains, and in other parts of the country they made even more. But I am not worried. The demographic tide is with the progressive vision. The religious right, the old white regressives, they are dying off one by one, and a new multi-racial, multi-cultural generation is following close behind.

They are a generation that takes gay people for granted. They are attuned to cities and to peer groups, and they don’t long for the days of June Cleaver and the Mad Men. They’ve always had birth control, rock music, and the internet. They’re going to do things we can barely imagine, and those things will be less racist, less dependent on religion, and hopefully less fear-driven than you might imagine if you looked at this one election.

I am not afraid of them, and I am not afraid of the future, and I am not afraid of a short-term Republican House. The Republicans have no coherent governing vision, and so they are doomed to fail. There is a reason why they consistently refused to outline what they would do if elected. There is nothing they will do, other than cause trouble. They will do nothing but block progress as long as they can, just as they have for the past two years. But they can’t block it for long, because the tide is already moving against them.

Edit to add: This chart makes the point clearly. I picked it up from Andrew Sullivan. This wasn’t the electorate of 2008 repudiating Obama. This was a separate subset of the electorate that is revved up and voted heavily in the mid-terms (which tend to be dominated by older voters), while the younger, more diverse part of the general electorate sat it out. I don’t think that’s a good thing, but the election and what it means has to be understood in context.

Election day!

Fierce Planet Posted on November 2, 2010 by jnfrNovember 2, 2010

We already voted by mail, so I’m spending the morning working on my NaNoWriMo count. But if you haven’t voted yet, please get out and vote today! Dan Froomkin at the Huffington Post has a bunch of useful information for voters.

Voters who encounter any problems of any kind today are urged to call 1-866-OUR VOTE, or post a complaint online, or tweet with questions or concerns. Some 2,000 legal volunteers are on hand to resolve issues, and a live tally of incoming calls can be seen at the OurVoteLive.org website.

Aren’t sure where to vote? The Voting Information Project can help, on the web or on mobile.

Voting is your birthright as a U.S. citizen, and your responsibility as well. Many, many people on this planet don’t have the ability to affect their government the way we do. Don’t toss that aside. Vote today.

Do you remember?

Fierce Planet Posted on November 1, 2010 by jnfrNovember 1, 2010

I do. And so do all the people in this video. And if you remember just how bad things were during the Bush Administration, you’ll know why you can’t vote Republican in this election.

Don’t forget to vote tomorrow! And don’t forgot how we got into the mess we are in.
