Edwards Urges Senate Democrats To Filibuster FISA Bill
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
I went to a caucus training last night, held by the JeffCo Dems. The Colorado caucuses will be held on Feb. 5th, and this was to prepare new people for the paperwork and organization of the caucuses. We had to do math! I am glad I had my Palm Pilot with me.
The meeting room was packed, must have been 150 people there – I couldn’t quite tell as there were standees all the way out the door. I was kind of on the youngish side of the crowd, which surprised me, as I am not youngish at all (54). The regulars were quite pleased to have such a full house. I think the Democrats in Colorado aren’t used to being such a majority yet, and of course it’s growing. Everyone’s excited about the Convention which will be in Denver later this year.
The funniest moment was when we were talking about the resolutions to consider for the party platform, and the chairlady was using the example of impeaching George Bush, and when she was explaining how to do the vote, of course, as soon as she said “Do you want to impeach George Bush?” the whole room shouted “Yes!”.
It was nice to be among my people.
From Martin Luther King III.
…You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don’t have lobbyists in Washington and they don’t get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.
I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.
From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had. …
And that’s why it’s so important that John stay in the race. More than anyone, his campaign is driving the move towards more progressive policies by all the candidates.
Bill Moyers speaks. You listen.
There is no inevitability to history. Someone has to seize and turn it.
And I miss his radio show a lot. But having him in the Senate wouldn’t be bad, either.
I don’t suppose the networks will play clips of this over and over endlessly, and speculate about his fitness and his obvious calculation. Will they?
Earlier in the day, after hearing from a voter who recalled his father, Mr. Romney choked up momentarily, according to a pool reporter who was present.
And I’m very glad of it. I still hope that he will take the nomination before the end, but even if he doesn’t, he’s had a positive effect on the race by pushing the other candidates to engage with sincerely progressive, populist ideas.

UPDATE: The other question in the delegate picture is “How will the superdelegates vote?” 2008 Convention Watch has a superdelegate list, where they are tracking the voting commitments of these important party officials.
