Election details

Fierce Planet Posted on September 7, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 7, 2022

Here’s another source of detailed information for both national and local elections. Daniel Nichanian of Bolts Magazine always has some of the best real-time information right through election day. Here’s an example focused on this very week. What to Watch in the Primaries from September 6 to September 13 …Here are 29 races that Bolts is watching on Sept. 6 (in Massachusetts), and Sept. 13 (in Delaware, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island), as prepared by Bolts editor Daniel Nichanian. More may be added to our cheat sheet through Election Day. Check back on Election Night as we fill in each … Continue reading →

Good morning!

Fierce Planet Posted on September 3, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 23, 2022

Not sure this Biden speech will change many minds, but I am so glad he said what he did. It’s a moment in our country’s history that deserves recognition, and the danger must be named. I think he named it well, and judging by all the fainting and whines today, other people think so too.   I haven’t posted much recently because I’ve been busy. In addition to writing up my thoughts on the midterms, with a reference guide to the most important Senate races, I spent a couple of days following virtual sessions of Netroots Nation 2022. I live-tweeted … Continue reading →

The 2022 midterms are now

Fierce Planet Posted on September 1, 2022 by jnfrSeptember 27, 2022

The mid-terms are coming up fast and the political situation in this country is in flux. I want to focus on the key races that will help us hold, or perhaps even expand, our Senate majority. That’s looking very possible right now, even though the more traditional election forecasters still rate most of these races as toss-ups at best. I don’t have to tell you how important this election is. I honestly believe the future of our nation depends on holding the line this year and in 2024. I’m focusing here on Senate races that need to be top priorities … Continue reading →

Medication abortion – will we lose that too?

Fierce Planet Posted on August 15, 2022 by jnfrAugust 15, 2022

We certainly will if the antiabortion groups get their way. They are working now on legislation to ban medication abortions, even if the pills come from a state where abortion is legal. (gift link, should get you past the paywall) Most abortions are done at home. Antiabortion groups are taking aim. Two top antiabortion groups have crafted and successfully lobbied for state legislation to ban or further restrict the predominant way pregnancies are ended in the United States — via drugs taken at home, often facilitated by a network of abortion rights groups…. The groups are pursuing a variety of … Continue reading →

Useful legislation

Fierce Planet Posted on August 8, 2022 by jnfrAugust 8, 2022

No, it doesn’t go far enough. And yes, we still have more work to do—we must keep pushing. But this is a real victory, especially on climate change. For details on the likely effects of the bill, listen to this podcast at Dave Roberts’ Volts, where he discusses the impact of this bill with experts. And I’ll re-up this post from Bill McKibben, which outlines what our next steps must be if the bill does pass: Making Momentum Matter! – Post-Manchin, the climate fight morphs in many ways. I’ll post more analysis as I can.

This energy is what we need…

Fierce Planet Posted on August 6, 2022 by jnfrAugust 6, 2022

…to win in the mid-terms. These organizers in Kansas walked door-to-door, day after day, getting out the vote to defeat Kansas’s abominable abortion law. They raised tons of money to support the effort. They coordinated with Indivisible and never gave up. Every one of us has to match their heart and their efforts to win this fall. This is an interview with community organizer Yazmin Bruno-Valdez, and with Olivia Julianna of Gen-Z for Change. You may have heard of Olivia. She was attacked by Matt Gaetz, body-shamed publicly, and she used that attention to raise more than two million dollars … Continue reading →

The Manchin Act

Fierce Planet Posted on August 1, 2022 by jnfrAugust 1, 2022

The deeply imperfect “Inflation Reduction Act” is so important to pass. I won’t truly believe in the passage until I see it, of course, because our dysfunctional Congress does tend to kill every potential step forward. But this bill contains many policies that can help us make real progress against the most important emergency we face: climate change and the resulting disruption to current ecological systems on earth, systems that humans and other living things rely on for survival. From Rebecca Solnit and Terry Tempest Williams: Humanity can’t equivocate any longer. This is a climate emergency …The climate emergency has … Continue reading →

High engagement

Fierce Planet Posted on July 26, 2022 by jnfrJuly 26, 2022

We have to start planning for the 2022 midterm elections. So far, it seems Democratic engagement with the election is running high. How that will translate into voting turnout is hard to say, but let’s keep this sort of pressure on. WinRed, of course, was created specifically as a counter to ActBlue, which has been so successful in raising small dollar donations for Democratic candidates. WinRed works for them, but has never been quite as successful as ActBlue has been. GOP small-dollar donations via WinRed are flat this year, while Democrats' have increased substantially the last 2 months on ActBluehttps://t.co/LdteF1mLxZ … Continue reading →
