This extraordinary woman

Fierce Planet Posted on March 24, 2022 by jnfrMarch 25, 2022

Ketanji Brown Jackson is, not surprisingly, more qualified than any recent candidate for the Supreme Court. Seeing the way Republicans treated her yesterday was disgusting, disturbing, horrible. That she sat calmly and responded with dignity was no surprise, but still beautiful to see. At least we had some moments like this one. "I would tell them to persevere." Giving advice to young people, Judge Jackson emotionally tells the story of being given crucial encouragement by a woman she did not know while a student at Harvard. pic.twitter.com/XmvrY95Fvk — The Recount (@therecount) March 23, 2022 And also this very passionate moment … Continue reading →

Kherson

Fierce Planet Posted on March 21, 2022 by jnfrMarch 21, 2022

The city of Kherson, like Mariupol, is near the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. Russia has made a heavy push along the Sea and early on took control of Kherson, at least nominally. As it turns out, and as predicted, overrunning a city militarily is very different from holding it in occupation indefinitely. And the citizens clearly do not want the Russians in their city. In Kherson, local people are shoving out Russian occupiers with bare hands. They are not scared to protest even after many activists were persecuted. “Go home” – they chant. pic.twitter.com/0HRnLIfB0j — Liubov Tsybulska (@TsybulskaLiubov) March … Continue reading →

Killing Mariupol

Aerial footage of Mariupol showing the extent of destruction caused by constant Russian shelling. People there say no street has been left intact #Ukraine pic.twitter.com/vl4fSOog8I — Bojan Pancevski (@bopanc) March 14, 2022 I took those photos in beautiful Mariupol just months ago. Mind-blowing and heart-breaking that it has come to this: More than 2,000 dead, and 400,000 trapped without heat, food or clean water. https://t.co/wctRynmDFe pic.twitter.com/N1jRSb9gPB — Matthew Luxmoore (@mjluxmoore) March 14, 2022

Disaster phase

Fierce Planet Posted on March 12, 2022 by jnfrMarch 12, 2022

Mariupol is in a “disaster phase now,” Doctors Without Borders emergency coordinator says An emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders told CNN that the humanitarian situation in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol is deteriorating by the day…. “They’re using snow and rain water, they’re breaking into heating systems to access the water in heating systems, but for many, water has already run out and so has the food for many people. The only people left with food are those who have stocks that they’re rationing,” he said from Vinnytsia, Ukraine…. Staff on the ground in Mariupol have told Wade that … Continue reading →

What’s happening in Mariupol…

Fierce Planet Posted on March 11, 2022 by jnfrMarch 11, 2022

is at the very least an attempt at genocide, and may yet become one entirely. 400,000 civilians are surrounded by Russian forces, have little to no food and water left, and are under constant assault by Russian bombs and artillery. The people cannot get supplies and all attempts to open humanitarian corridors out of the city have been crushed by Russian aggression. This article at the Guardian has before/after photo pairs that let you see the destruction around Mariupol. I do not want the US and NATO to go to war with Russia, but something must be done about the … Continue reading →

And in Russia
