Neurotic? Me?

Fierce Planet Posted on November 5, 2012 by jnfrNovember 5, 2012

Well, today and tomorrow are a lost cause as far as NaNoWriMo goes. I’ll canvass this afternoon and then sit around fretting for 36 hours. If I’m lucky. If we have to wait on Ohio’s provisional ballots (which won’t be counted until Nov.17), I may keel over entiirely. Edit to add: Having spent five hours canvassing today, I tell you it’s a far better use of your nervous energy than fretting over your computer.

Paul Ryan and his votes in the House

Fierce Planet Posted on August 14, 2012 by jnfrAugust 14, 2012

A friend of mine put this list together. It’s useful in figuring out who Paul Ryan is. Re-posted here with permission. Paul Ryan Voted NO on allowing human embryonic stem cell research Voted YES on terminating the Home Affordable mortgage Program Voted NO on modifying bankruptcy rules to avoid mortgage foreclosures Voted NO on additional $825 billion for economic recovery package Voted NO on monitoring TARP funds to ensure more mortgage relief Voted NO on $60B stimulus package for jobs, infrastructure, & energy Voted NO on revitalizing severely distressed public housing Voted NO on regulating the subprime mortgage industry Voted … Continue reading →

Who is Paul Ryan?

Fierce Planet Posted on August 13, 2012 by jnfrAugust 13, 2012

Seems like a lot of people don’t know much about Paul Ryan and his plans. Here’s a bit of reading if you want to learn more. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has extensive analysis of Ryan’s budget plan and what it would entail. It’s worth posting this short summary from their overview: “The new Ryan budget is a remarkable document — one that, for most of the past half-century, would have been outside the bounds of mainstream discussion due to its extreme nature. In essence, this budget is Robin Hood in reverse — on steroids. It would likely … Continue reading →

Congressional Districts

Fierce Planet Posted on August 3, 2012 by jnfrAugust 3, 2012

A friend tipped me off to this great interactive map of US Congressional Districts. I love being able to view different states up close and see where their Representatives are from. I also like watching the shift from 2010 to the new 2012 districts based on the last census and whatever political maneuvering the states have gone through. My own district (will be CO-7) is very different than the one I’ve been in the past ten years (CO-2). Anyway, it’s a great tool. Hmm… embed isn’t working. You can see the map here.

You are not the American people

Fierce Planet Posted on November 4, 2010 by jnfrNovember 4, 2010

I’m already tired of hearing that “the American people spoke”. Some of them did, sure, the ones who turned out for this election. Last election a very different set of people spoke. Both sets are real, both sets count, and one doesn’t trump the other. There is no reason for Democrats to throw aside all of their own ideas about how to govern just because they lost the House in one election. We still have the Senate and the Presidency and there’s another election in two years. While I sincerely hope the Republicans are finally ready to come to the … Continue reading →

I am not despondent

Fierce Planet Posted on November 3, 2010 by jnfrNovember 3, 2010

In fact, I’m not particularly worried by this election. I am sorry to lose Betsy Markey. I am happy we’re keeping Michael Bennet. Some other good things happened in Colorado as well: all three tax-busting amendments were defeated, and the profoundly misguided “fetus personhood” amendment was defeated. Still, even here conservatives made a lot of gains, and in other parts of the country they made even more. But I am not worried. The demographic tide is with the progressive vision. The religious right, the old white regressives, they are dying off one by one, and a new multi-racial, multi-cultural generation … Continue reading →

Do you remember?

Fierce Planet Posted on November 1, 2010 by jnfrNovember 1, 2010

I do. And so do all the people in this video. And if you remember just how bad things were during the Bush Administration, you’ll know why you can’t vote Republican in this election. Don’t forget to vote tomorrow! And don’t forgot how we got into the mess we are in.

The Republican Party’s governing philosophy

Fierce Planet Posted on October 26, 2010 by jnfrOctober 26, 2010

Seriously, the Republicans in Congress don’t have one. What drives them is a pure lust for power, and money for their corporate backers. They have no actual ideas about how to grow the economy, how to raise wages, how to improve education, or about what to do for any other problem facing the country. They’ve got nothing. “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” — Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
