The Gravity of the Situation in Afghanistan
Just to put this in perspective: There have been 556 Americans killed
in Afghanistan since 2001. 64 of them–nearly 12 percent–have been
killed in the last six weeks.
Obama intends to remove troops from Iraq and instead fortify our troops in Afghanistan, which is where we should have been focused all along. Iraq was a mistake and a distraction, and McCain still doesn’t realize it.
Wanted!
Now that Karl Rove has skipped the country, it’s time to take him into custody, right? My friend Skip Mendler made this lovely poster to help in that cause, and has given permission for it to be scattered around freely. You can download a PDF version here. Print out a bunch and pass them around! I have one on my refrigerator.

What’s McCain’s Position?
When it comes to birth control, even McCain isn’t sure.
It’s no surprise to me, of course, that McCain doesn’t want to admit he’s against basic support for women’s health care. It’s a losing proposition, like so many of his ideas.
Feingold on FISA
Feingold speaks in the Senate today.
UPDATE: We listened to this bit with Jonathan Turley on Countdown last night. It’s a good summary of how outrageous this bill is, and what it means for the Constitution.
UPDATE: And all the amendments fail. Final vote this afternoon, but that’s the end of our chances.
One Last Day
Tomorrow the Senate takes up the FISA supplemental bill, which if passed will, once and for all, hide the extent of domestic surveillance under the Bush administration. I am deeply embarrassed that my Congressman Mark Udall voted in favor of this travesty.
Please contact your Senator and ask them to vote NO on this bill, or at the very least, vote YES on the Bingaman amendment.

It’s Really Very Simple
Barack Obama intends to bring the troops home from Iraq. John McCain, on the other hand, wants to maintain a permanent military presence there. Everything else is details, and while details matter, you shouldn’t let them obscure this basic, profound difference between the candidates.
A Free People
Feingold Speaks
Don’t give up hope yet. The fight to end illegal surveillance by the Bush administration isn’t over.
The Senate will once again consider H.R. 6304 when they return after the holiday recess. Please consider contacting your Senators and ask them to support various amendments proposed by Sens. Feingold, Dodd, Webb, and Tester to fix some of the most glaring problems with this bill.
Simple Truth
Boy, the media sure has itself in a tizzy over Wes Clark’s statement, don’t they? But there’s nothing in this statement that is demeaning or insulting. It’s a statement of opinion, and so of course you might not agree, but it wasn’t an insult. Time to get out the handkerchiefs and smelling salts, I guess.
SCHIEFFER: Can I just interrupt you? I have to say, Barack Obama hasn
