The Gay Drain

Fierce Planet Posted on November 10, 2004 by jnfrNovember 10, 2004

While the rest of us are arguing over secession, you can’t really blame gay people for leaving the U.S. in droves.

“Our rights are slowly being eroded,” said the award-winning screenwriter [Craig Lucas], who plans to move to Vancouver with his partner, a set designer. “It happened in Nazi Germany, the incredible brain drain of artists, scientists and writers who fled to the U.S. Now it’s happening here [in the United States]. The government wants gays to live outside the protection of the law.” …

“I currently have more than 100 applications in the works on behalf of prospective gay American immigrants,” [a Toronto immigration lawyer] said. “These are highly skilled people with no dependents and substantial savings. Canada is benefiting enormously.”

Lying to women in the name of morality

Fierce Planet Posted on November 10, 2004 by jnfrNovember 10, 2004

If it means scaring even one woman away from abortion, the right is happy to lie.

Women seeking abortions in Mississippi must first sign a form indicating they’ve been told abortion can increase their risk of breast cancer. They aren’t told that scientific reviews have concluded there is no such risk.

Similar information suggesting a cancer link is given to women considering abortion in Texas, Louisiana and Kansas, and legislation to require such notification has been introduced in 14 other states.

And in Fallujah

Fierce Planet Posted on November 10, 2004 by jnfrNovember 10, 2004

It looks like the leaders and many of the insurgents have fled the city in advance of the assault. Now there’s a surprise. I thought they were going to put on their red coats and stand up in a long line to fight us fairly!
We really haven’t learned much from history, have we?

Never forget their true agenda

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2004 by jnfrNovember 9, 2004

…is to control women’s sexuality, like it or not.
Druggists refuse to give out pill

For a year, Julee Lacey stopped in a CVS pharmacy near her home in a Fort Worth suburb to get refills of her birth-control pills. Then one day last March, the pharmacist refused to fill Lacey’s prescription because she did not believe in birth control….

The American Pharmacists Association, with 50,000 members, has a policy that says druggists can refuse to fill prescriptions if they object on moral grounds, but they must make arrangements so a patient can still get the pills. Yet some pharmacists have refused to hand the prescription to another druggist to fill.

In Madison, Wis., a pharmacist faces possible disciplinary action by the state pharmacy board for refusing to transfer a woman’s prescription for birth-control pills to another druggist or to give the slip back to her. He would not refill it because of his religious views.

Some advocates for women’s reproductive rights are worried that such actions by pharmacists and legislatures are gaining momentum….

“We have always understood that the battles about abortion were just the tip of a larger ideological iceberg, and that it’s really birth control that they’re after also,” says Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Get ready for 2006

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2004 by jnfrNovember 9, 2004

It’s time to focus on the next round of Senate elections. In these, more Republican seats are up for grabs than Democratic seats. Johnny Z has some analysis of the races. Anyone know of other people watching this already?
I’ve found a different list and some other info at blogcritics.
And some more at Modern Vertebrate.

Time to open your checkbooks… again

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2004 by jnfrNovember 9, 2004

I think James Wolcott has it right. One big success for liberals this year was that we found a way to tap into a huge pool of small to medium donations. We were able to support the Kerry campaign financially in a way that we really didn’t do for Gore. But even though the election is over, there’s lots of good progressive work being done by other groups, and there are new campaigns ahead.
Get out your checkbook and credit cards and donate today! Wolcott has some suggestions about useful places to put your cash.

Should we make it official?

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2004 by jnfrNovember 9, 2004

Red states and blue states have little in common, it seems to a lot of us. There’s a lot of talk floating around about splitting the country, and maybe that’s the only way we’ll ever have peace. But it sure leaves us purple-staters in a quandry, doesn’t it? I like Colorado; I don’t want to live in California. But as I’ve said before, I don’t want to be part of Jesusland, either.

Fierce Planet Posted on November 9, 2004 by jnfrNovember 9, 2004

and plans to work hard in the Senate to combat Bush’s agenda. I like the sound of that.
