John G. Roberts

Fierce Planet Posted on July 19, 2005 by jnfrJuly 19, 2005

CNN is saying that he’s stated Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Sounds like Bush’s kind of Supreme Court Justice.
UPDATE: This is from Prochoice.org:

John G. Roberts is nominated to the DC Circuit of the Circuit Court of Appeals, widely perceived to be the most influential of the appellate courts and a stepping-stone to the United States Supreme Court. As an attorney in the Justice Departments of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, Roberts repeatedly argued for the reversal of Roe v. Wade stating that there was “no support in the text, structure or history of the Constitution” for the reasoning behind Roe. NAF believes that the appointment of Roberts will weaken the protections of Roe and its progeny. Numerous cases impacting the accessibility of abortion could come before this circuit, including administrative decisions such as the availability of mifepristone (RU-486).

…at those who would do this:

Suicide Car Bomber Kills 18 Iraqi Kids
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – A suicide car bomb exploded next to U.S. troops handing out candy and toys, killing 18 children and teenagers Wednesday. Parents heard the shattering explosion and raced out to the discover the worst – children’s mangled, bloodied bodies strewn on the street.
Up to 27 people were killed by the blast in the Shiite Muslim neighborhood, including an American soldier. At least 70 people were injured, a newborn and three U.S. soldiers among them.
Children’s slippers lay piled near the blast crater not far from a crumbled child’s bicycle as blood pooled in the street.
Twelve of the dead were 13 or younger and six were between 14 and 17, said police Lt. Mohammed Jassim Jabr. Among the wounded was 4-day-old Miriam Jabber, cut slightly by flying glass and debris.

I’m curious

Fierce Planet Posted on July 13, 2005 by jnfrJuly 13, 2005

Does anyone out there know where and how Karl Rove got the nickname “Turd Blossom”?
EDIT: Never mind! Just caught Jon Stewart from last night, and he says “Turd Blossom” was bestowed by the President. Figures.

I agree with Dana Stevens

I don’t like the new set of The Daily Show. I want the sofa back, for all the reasons Stevens outlines so well.

One thing to keep in mind

Fierce Planet Posted on July 12, 2005 by jnfrJuly 12, 2005

Despite the right-wing bluster, Joe Wilson was right. The Niger documents were forged (we’re not sure by whom; they’ve been traced back to Italian intelligence but the trail stops there, and of course the Republican-controlled Congress has so far refused to investigate further). Saddam Hussein did not attempt to purchase uranium from Africa.
There was no current, ongoing attempt in Iraq to create a nuclear bomb, and there certainly was no bomb ready to launch within 45 minutes. There were no weapons of mass destruction other than those under seal of the United Nations (now lost to looters and insurgents).
This administration invaded Iraq because that’s what they always intended to do. 9/11 was a pretext, the supposed weapons of mass destruction were a pretext, and we are less safe today because of the actions of Karl Rove and George W. Bush. Rove didn’t go after Wilson in an attempt to keep Michael Cooper from spreading a lie. He was trying to keep Cooper, and other reporters, from spreading the truth.

Reacting to terror

Fierce Planet Posted on July 7, 2005 by jnfrJuly 7, 2005

I am shocked, as everyone must be, by the terror attacks in London today. I hope the casualties are few and that the people take good care of each other in difficult circumstances.
I’m reassured somewhat by the matter-of-fact approach the English take to this sort of attack. After all, terrorism isn’t new to them.
A friend pointed out this morning that while everyone is frightened of terrorist attacks, it’s most important to stand up with whatever courage we can find and insist that these attacks will not be allowed to change our way of life, and that we will not surrender our freedom in the face of our fear. That’s a message I’m glad to hear on a day like this, and a message I’ve really missed hearing from our government since 9/11.

Casualties in Iraq over time

Fierce Planet Posted on June 26, 2005 by jnfrJune 26, 2005

Here is a flash map which animates casualties in Iraq over time and space. It’s fascinating to watch, in a terrible way. Pay special attention to the past month and the insurgency’s “last throes”.
