Equality Day

Fierce Planet Posted on August 26, 2013 by jnfrAugust 26, 2013

On August 26, 1920, women were at last granted the right to vote. Today is Women’s Equality Day. The picture below is from 1918. In a time when voting rights are under constant attack, I hope we show the same courage as those who fought for our rights so many years ago. Irin Carmon at MSNBC’s site has an interesting round-up from those days, predicting the evils that would befall if women were allowed to vote.

Election day!

Fierce Planet Posted on November 2, 2010 by jnfrNovember 2, 2010

We already voted by mail, so I’m spending the morning working on my NaNoWriMo count. But if you haven’t voted yet, please get out and vote today! Dan Froomkin at the Huffington Post has a bunch of useful information for voters. Voters who encounter any problems of any kind today are urged to call 1-866-OUR VOTE, or post a complaint online, or tweet with questions or concerns. Some 2,000 legal volunteers are on hand to resolve issues, and a live tally of incoming calls can be seen at the OurVoteLive.org website. Aren’t sure where to vote? The Voting Information Project … Continue reading →

Trying to stay hopeful

Fierce Planet Posted on October 22, 2010 by jnfrOctober 22, 2010

Talking Points Memo has a slideshow of polling trendlines in a bunch of hot Senate and Governor’s Races. In spite of the Dems getting a little momentum recently, things still look pretty bad overall. I’m trying to stay upbeat (and yes, I’ve voted myself), but have to admit I’m pretty worried at this point about how bad it’s going to go on Election Day. If you know an Obama voter who is not turning out this year, please encourage them to vote! A lot of these races are only a few percentage points apart, and turnout will be key. Edit … Continue reading →

Numbers, numbers

Fierce Planet Posted on April 24, 2008 by jnfrApril 24, 2008

I was curious about the voting totals for Clinton and Obama, since Clinton has been declaring that she’s won the most votes cast so far. So I once again ran to the USA Today Election Results page, and tossed a bunch of things in my spreadsheet. It really is remarkable how close these two candidates are. I’m going to lay out the percentages to each candidate below, along with the “other” percentage. There’s something interesting here. Clinton Obama Other Total w/o FL or MI 47.4 49.2 3.4 Total w/FL only 47.5 48.3 4.2 Total w/FL & MI 47.7 47.3 5.0 … Continue reading →

Election Day!

Fierce Planet Posted on November 7, 2006 by jnfrNovember 7, 2006

Don’t forget to vote. I’m grabbing this Molly Ivins quote from MyDD. Let it be your motto. “So keep fightin’ for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin’ ass and celebratin’ the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was.” -Molly Ivins
