Haiti
I've put a link in the sidebar to Doctors Without Borders, which desperately needs funds to provide health care in Haiti after the earthquake. Many other organizations also need donations. Please do what you can.

Rest in Peace

Chairperson of the Pakistan's Peoples Party
Why People's Party
I cannot tender you any other advise but that the Pakistan People's Party is a party which has come into being on the basis of certain principals. Those principals are democracy, which is our policy, socialism, which is our economic program and Islam, which is our religion......
Speech at Party Meeting, Peshawar, October 27, 1968

Two gay teens being taken to their deaths in Iran. Odd how much this scene reminds me of our own religious right. And of course, our invasion of Iraq has delivered that country to Iran as new allies. Pointer from Pandagon. My heart breaks too, Amanda.

A new blog is compiling resources for how you can help tsunami victims and survivors. I've mostly been noting tsunami news over at World Turning (linked on the right).

So, there are massive demonstrations because of possible vote fraud in the Ukraine. Are we better or worse because we don't take to the streets when we distrust our masters? Who can say. It seems clear that the U.S. and Russia are using the Ukraine as a pull-toy, but I have no idea what is best for the people there. I was watching the PBS News Hour last night and they had an interesting piece which included an interview with Michael McFaul, who has a lot of credentials and seemed to know a lot about the situation, and who stated very clearly that international observers felt sure the vote would be fraudulent, and that this was well known. The transcript is at the link. Today I was doing errands and heard a radio interview with a U.S. woman who happens to be a Ukranian native (I think; she used to live there and runs a U.S. paper for Ukranian exiles), and she gave a lot of interesting information about the Ukranian history with Russia. She seemed to believe that this revolution was inevitable. To hear her at that link, look for the "Ukranian-American Interview". I didn't hear the other segments, because I had to run into Home Depot to get tarps to cover my firewood from the snow. I feel very lucky to have both a furnace and firewood under the circumstances. I do wish I also had faith in our voting systems. Fistful of Euros is blogging about the Ukraine these days, and they know much more than I do. And here's a blogger who is in the Ukraine now; that's a link I snagged from Andrew Sullivan.

While the rest of us are arguing over secession, you can't really blame gay people for leaving the U.S. in droves.

He said research and successful testing of new nuclear-missile systems technology was being conducted. "I am sure that in the near future weapons will appear ... which other nuclear powers do not and will not possess."

The Gay Drain
"Our rights are slowly being eroded," said the award-winning screenwriter [Craig Lucas], who plans to move to Vancouver with his partner, a set designer. "It happened in Nazi Germany, the incredible brain drain of artists, scientists and writers who fled to the U.S. Now it's happening here [in the United States]. The government wants gays to live outside the protection of the law." ...
"I currently have more than 100 applications in the works on behalf of prospective gay American immigrants," [a Toronto immigration lawyer] said. "These are highly skilled people with no dependents and substantial savings. Canada is benefiting enormously."
